My roommate Chris Knight School, whose new LP Revenger just came out, recently got a package from their label Make a Mess with the new Brilliant Colors 7” Walk Into the World, and it is brilliant. I’ve waxed poetic about them before in the pages of Tom Tom Mag (whose 3rd Issue just came out), but I will fully admit again, I’m so in love with Brilliant Colors. The video is from Mondo Vision, an awesome video zine out of the Bay Area with live footage, interviews, skits and other silly goodness from bands all over. My friend Laura happens to be in this episode in another video along with Brilliant Colors. Hi Laura!
The band seems to be defined by Jess who plays guitar and sings. Their guitar playing and singing style, much like their music in general, is hard and soft at the same time, simultaneously spare and full with simple instrumentation but ultimately intricate arrangements. They remind me of a punkier Primitives or even more a poppier, melodically oriented Raincoats and Colors pull off a flat monotone version of riot grrl sing-speak, part Vivian Girls, part Bratmobile. Songs like Absolutely Anything and English Cities seem a nod to that influence. Get it while you can kids cos the 7”s gonna fly like hotcakes. Their other singles on Captured Tracks and Make A Mess are both sold out.
